What is Toothache?
What are the Symptoms of Toothache?
If you experience any of the following symptoms for more than three days or in a recurring pattern, you should book an appointment with your Indiana dentist immediately.
Failure to do so may result in an easily treatable condition becoming aggravated and serious:
- Sharp, throbbing pain in the tooth while chewing.
- Swelling around the tooth or swelling in the jaw or cheek.
- Hot or cold sensitivity.
- Fever.
- Headache.
- Foul or metallic taste in the mouth.
- Persistent bad breath.
During your consultation with Dr. Atcha, he will ask you about your problems, when they started and the nature of the pain involved. He will then perform a thorough visual examination of your teeth and gums – don’t worry, he is very gentle and very kind and there is absolutely no pain involved! Dr. Atcha will then likely take low radiation X-ray images of the problematic tooth to see what’s going on inside the pulp chamber and the underlying bone. He may also palpate your throat, head and neck to rule out any associated conditions or symptoms. Once Dr. Atcha has determined the cause of your problem, he will explain in detail your treatment options and address any questions you might have.
What are the Treatment Options for Toothache?
This really depends on the cause of your toothache. If it’s a cavity, Dr. Atcha will file away the decayed portions of the tooth and fill them in again with a strong dental filling cement, which he will then shape to mimic the missing natural tooth structure. If the toothache is due to an infected pulp chamber, you may require root canal treatment, which really isn’t as painful as it’s reputation will have you believing! At Dr. Atcha’s practice, all efforts are made to keep patients very comfortable, relaxed and pain-free, so you probably won’t even remember much about your procedure if you do undergo a root canal. If the tooth cannot be saved, Dr. Atcha may recommend a dental implant. Either way, the steps taken will be to ensure that all pain is permanently eliminated and your oral health restored.
